                  What is Cordyceps Sinensis?

Cordyceps sinensis, in its natural habitat, is a small fungus that parasitizes on one particular species of caterpillar, That's right, I said caterpillar. The fungus thrives on the Tibetan plateau at elevations of 18,000 feet where the oxygen content is very low. I was surprised when I was researching this product because many articles identified Cordyceps as a mushroom, when in fact, it truly is a fungus. Cordyceps was first discovered some 1500 years ago in the Chinese Himalayas, by yak herders. The herdsman would notice that when the yaks would graze on mushroom stems, a mushroom without a top, they would suddenly become playful and very energetic. The Chinese called it Dong Chong Xia Cao, which means "summer grass, winter worm", First discovered during the Tang Dynasty in AD 620, the Chinese Emperors used it for its healing and longevity properties. It was not until the 18th century wasCordyceps growing naturally in the wild Cordyceps introduced toCordyceps excavated to reveal the caterpiller below grade the Western World. The dead caterpillar, or larva, is not used in the final product. Once the raw product reaches the plant, the larva is removed while maximizing the quantity of Cordyceps.  The picture to the right shows the end product, Cordyceps in powder form.

For us in the Western World, the thought of eating or ingesting something that started out as a fungus on a caterpillar, eventually killed and digested the caterpillar, and the Cordyceps is removed from the carcass and ground into a powder, rather distasteful!

What is Rhodiola Rosea?

RhodiRhodiola rosea growing in natureola is also known as the Golden Root and Roseroot. The roots of this herb smell like a rose when cut, thus rosea. Rhodiola is a member of the Crassulaceae family and strictly grows in cold regions, at very high altitudes. You will find it growing the Arctic, Rocky Mountains, Central Asia, the Alps, Europe, Iceland and many other areas above 1Harvested Rhodiola rosea root0,000 feet with frosty temperatures. Rhodiola has a prominent yellow flower and grows from 12 to 30 inches in height. It is not the yellow flower, stem or leaves that is so sought after. For this herb, it's all in the roots which can be seen in the picture to the right.

It is very important to understand that there are over 200 species of the Rhodiola plant. It is only the Rhodiola rosea species that has proven to have all the meaningful health benefits.

Rhodiola is being used as a medicinal herb and can be traced back to 77 A.D. A Greek Physician, Dr. Dioscorides, documented Rhodiola rosea (called rodia riza back then) in his medical text - De Materia Medica. The Vikings used Rhodiola to increase endurance and stamina during their journeys. The Chinese Emperors would commission expeditions to remote parts of the Siberian Mountains to bring back the prized herb, Golden Root or Rhodiola. In 1725 the herb was given its current name - Rhodiola rosea by Swedish botanist Carl linnaeus.

From 77 A.D. to the mid 1900's, this herb was prized as a medical herb throughout almost all parts of Europe and Asia. Rhodiola grew primarily in Siberia and it was so valued that it was illegal to trade the herb outside of the Russian borders. Russians used the herb to survive the harsh Siberian winters.

While there was tremendous anecdotal evidence, there was limited research on how Rhodiola worked. That all changed when the Soviet Union began extensive and top secret research into herbs after World War II. Wow, is this getting exciting or what? Are we talking Cold War activities and the KGB? Let's see.

After World War II the Soviets launched a country wide program to make Russians more competitive in the military, athletics and sciences. One aspect of this program was the investigation of herbal remedies that claimed to increase mental capacity, energy, endurance and stamina. In 1947 a Soviet Scientist, Dr. Lazarev, coined the term Adaptogen.

Adaptogen herbs must conform to these 3 standards:

1. Must be nontoxic and cause very few, if any, side effects
2. Produce nonspecific resistance in the body to all types of stressors (physical, chemical and biological)
3. Produce a normalizing influence on the body.

What do those three standards really mean? An adaptogen herb will be nontoxic and cause few, if any, side effects. An adaptogen herb must help build resistance to all areas of stress that may affect our body. For example, if an herb helped with physical exhaustion, but did nothing to protect against viruses (biological stressor) it would NOT BE AN ADAPTOGEN. Man in stress and in need of ReviveFinally, an adaptogen herb will be able to normalize the body and place the body in proper balance. The key with an adaptogen is being able to adapt to what the body needs and balancing the body. An herb that could increase energy if your body is fatigued and also decrease energy if your body is over stimulated, would be an example of an adaptogen herb.

                            Do adaptogens herbs really exist?

We understand that from a Western medical perspective, adaptogens sound too good to be true. An herb that adapts and helps our body with whatever it needs, and does no harm ... how could this be? Western medicine is based on using one drug to treat one specific problem, and then use another drug for another problem. Adaptogen herbs take a completely different approach and treat any problems we have as all connected to a balance issue in our body. Return balance to the body and you correct all the problems.

How did the Soviets identify adaptogens?

Dr. Lazarev, Dr. Brekhman and a team of more than 1,200 Soviet scientist, biologist and physicians began examining all the herbs for possible adaptogen effects. One of the most useful tests to see if an herb can help an animal adapt to stress is called the Swim Test.
 Swimming rat test
A rat, when placed in water, will swim for 10-15 minutes and then only move in small amounts to stay afloat. The Soviet team gave rats possible adaptogen herbs and tested to see if they would swim longer. Herbs that could increase the swim time were then subject to rigorous tests to see if they could help the body adapt to all types of stresses. How did Rhodiola do on the swim test? Rhodiola increased the rats swim time by 35-59%!

In total, the Russian team investigated over 4,000 plants and conducted more than 1,000 clinical studies and experiments on adaptogens. Remember, the stated goal of the Soviets at the time was to find ways to increase the performance of Russian athletes, military, political officers and scientists. This research was considered of vital importance to the strength of the Soviet Union. Finally in 1968, Dr Brekhman published the results of all their studies - only 4 herbs were considered true adaptogens. Of course, Rhodiola Rosea was one of them.

How do we now know about top secret Russian research on Rhodiola?

We have two events to thank for our knowledge on Rhodiola - the fall of the Soviet Union and the actions of a Soviet Soldier named Dr. Zakir Ramazanov. During the winter of 1980, Russia was at war with Afghanistan and it was then that Ramazanov was introduced to Rhodiola for the first time. One of his comrades received a care package from home (Siberia) that contained some Rhodiola roots. They made tea from the roots and everyone that drank the tea, felt stronger, had more energy and seemed to have less stress allowing them to better deal with the harsh winter conditions and the war in general.

After the war, Dr. Ramazanov, below - left,  earned his PhD but suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He tried all types of sedatives and herbs but nothing really helped. Finally, in 1984 he was in Dr. Ramazanov - The father of Rhodiola roseaSiberia giving a lecture and he remembered his comrade, with the special tea, was from Siberia. Before leaving for home, he decided to pick some Rhodiola and take it home with him. After a few months, the depression was totally gone. He further noticed he was not overreacting to problems and the horrors of the war were no longer on his mind. The good doctor decided to come to the US to further research the Rhodiola plant. In 1990, the Soviet Union fell and all of the classified documents became available to the Western World. Dr. Ramazanov was so impressed with the Rhodiola rosea, he opened a business in New York and imported the plant from Siberia, where he made Rhodiola supplements and other products as well. Dr. Ramazanov passed away on November 30, 2006.

So what did we learn from the Soviets top secret research documents? Here is a small list.

A powerful antioxidant - helps quench free radicals and defend against oxidative damage in our body
• Increases cellular energy by stimulating the production of ATP and CP (the fuel for the body)
• Balances stress response system by limiting the excess release of the stress hormone Cortisol
Calms the stress response system and supports the parasympathetic nervous system
• Elevates DNA and RNA in muscle cells, which in turn increasing the manufacture of proteins necessary for repair of cells and organs
Reduces oxygen consumption on a cellular level
• Stimulates the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine
• Stimulates the production of natural killer cells (cells that protect against infection)
Improves sexual performance
• Helps maintain high levels of creatine phosphate (athletes love this one)
